Improved Quality of Care
CareGiver significantly improves resident safety through the reduction of medication errors. Complications due to illegible handwriting are prevented through the secure delivery of precise electronic prescriptions directly to the institutional pharmacy. Automatic checks for negative drug interactions avert the occurrence of adverse drug events - a critical capability given the prevalence of residents with chronic and acute conditions that require multiple concurrent medications. CareGiver enables real-time access to a comprehensive drug reference library, thereby improving clinical decision-making by providing critical information at the point-of-care.

* Enhanced patient safety by reducing medical errors and providing critical
“patient-centric” information at the point-of-care
* Real-time, automated Quality of Care Indicators reporting
* Improved facility management
* Enabling automatic patient-specific point-of-care Drug Utilization Review
* Legible electronic scripts delivered to institutional pharmacy reduce med errors
* Electronic PRI and discharge summary
* Electronic point-of-care capture of Activities of Daily Living (ADL) by CNAs
* Real-time communication with attending physicians, clinicians, and consultant pharmacists
* Simplified exchange of health information between providers and pharmacy
* Enables efficient transition of patients between acute and subacute care settings by providing portable electronic health records
* Reduce duplicative and unnecessary testing

Cost Savings

31% of the $1.79 trillion U.S. healthcare bill is spent on labor-intensive, paper-based administrative tasks. Numerous studies have indicated that the widespread implementation of ePrescribing technology could potentially provide significant healthcare cost savings by improving administrative efficiencies, and dramatically enhance patient safety by averting preventable medical errors. The Department of Health and Human Services estimates that the adoption of ePrescribing could save 10% to 30% of the nation's current annual $1.7 trillion health care bill, better protect medical records, and decrease medical errors.

CareGiver reduces costs and administrative burdens, and increases reimbursements:

* Decrease purchasing and administrative costs
* Reduce costs by improving workflow efficiency and eliminates the administrative burdens associated with drug formulary prior authorization compliance that often involve telephone calls with the institutional pharmacy
* Automated MDS data collection yields appropriate RUG scoring
* Simplified compliance with complex regulatory requirements
* CareGiver is Medicaid-reimbursable in New York State
* A “cost-neutral” solution to the full extent the facility’s Medicaid Census
* Audit orders and vendor billing statements
* Easily reconcile orders entered with monthly billing statements
* Automate renewal of monthly orders with scheduled electronic ordering
* MDS and RAP auto-generated from ADL, MAR and TAR
* Anytime, anywhere access to patient medical history saves time
* Reduction of paperwork required by state and Federal regulatory guidelines
* Tracks treatment histories against Quality of Care indicators
* Increased nursing efficiency

Implementation at the Facility

Following a comprehensive technical and workflow process evaluation, our technology vendor will implement a fully-configurable, enterprise-grade secure wireless infrastructure at the stakeholder long term care facility, hospital, and physician practices including redundant high-speed Internet access, and configure CareGiver to conform with the facility’s workflow and administrative requirements.

Desktop PCs enable facility-wide system administration and unit clinical management from each nursing station, and secure, WiFi-enabled wireless PDAs allow clinicians to access resident-specific medical records and enter orders in a mobile fashion while on rounds. These “ruggedized” PDAs - compact, shock-proof, moisture-resistant, and readily sterilized - can be carried in a lab coat pocket or mounted directly to med carts.

Attending physicians have the ability to securely approve medication and treatment orders and access electronic medical records from a standard web browser or cellular “smart phone”, and a bi-directional data exchange is implemented between CareGiver and the affiliated Institutional Pharmacy.
