Independent mobility is one of the most important factors in quality of life for elders, and other clinical populations who need assistive devices such as walkers. Mobility is crucial for performing the activities of daily living (ADLs), as well as maintaining fitness and vitality. Lack of independence and exercise can lead to a vicious cycle. Decreased mobility due to a perceived lack of safety can cause muscular atrophy and a loss of the feeling of empowerment (both of which contribute to further decreased mobility).
